"My first public gallery exhibition
was in August 1990, a group graduation show, self
organized at a "known gallery in London's Covent
Garden," says Nick. "I became a professional artist in
1991 in South Africa. My girlfriend and I worked
together in an artistic partnership and we came here to
Koh Samu, earning our living from our art work for the
next seven years".
Nick, a sculptor and painter of oil paintings graduated
with honors in 3D Design. He has exhibited worldwide in
venues ranging from the Oriental Ban Taling Ngam here on
Koh Samui to a royal residence in Phuket and a private
show in Germany.
Artist's Statement:
The
root of my artistic in inspiration lies in Mother Nature
(mostly); more specifically in her contrasts. For
example where the land meets the sea, here on
Samui we can have an amazing sunset in one direction and
a tropical storm brewing in he other. I am inspired by
what I call nature's placement and natural design.
It may be in the form a perfectly eroded hole n a
beautifully shaped beach pebble or sand textures and
patterns at low tide.
Some of my sculptures may have a strong relationship to
naturally eroded forms while others are more designed
and have more of a man-made feel to them as do some of
my paintings. In the sculptures I also try to show
contrasts. This could be rough and smooth textures on
the same piece, or a very organically shaped form in
harmony very a very angular form.
Over the years I have also been producing works on a
circular theme, the circle and its endless meanings,
deeply rooted in nature and deeply rooted in mankind. I
strive to find an erratic harmony or fluid precession in
my circular paintings by using a strong colour or bold
brush strokes, held in harmony by the circle placed on
the square canvas. And this is a theme I wish to keep
exploring in painting and later in sculpture too. the
paintings could described as symbolic\conceptual.
